Personal Equipment
Did you know that each year, SSPW sends all of our helmets and shoulder pads in to the manufacturers to be inspected? This process is called refurbishing. While it is not required every year, the Board of Directors for SSPW care about your child’s safety, and we prove this by ensuring that our equipment is in top working order. By sending our equipment in for refurbishing yearly, we ensure that every helmet and shoulder pad has been inspected and certified to be in good working order.
During the refurbishing process, each helmet has its paint stripped down and it is then inspected for damage. The inspector looks for any defects in the helmet, such as small hairline or major cracks, broken padding snaps, or if too much metal on the facemask is exposed. If any defects are discovered, then the helmet is rejected for recertification and returned to the organization for disposal.
Once they pass the safety inspection, the helmet is then run through a steam oven, which sanitizes the inside of the helmet. It is then repainted in its original color, decals are reapplied, facemask is reinstalled and a certified inspection decal is placed on the back.
Generally, the cost for our organization to certify equipment is $7,000 to $8,000 a year. While this is a large expense, it is worth it to ensure our kids have safe equipment to use; not to mention a sharp, shiny, polished helmet to wear with pride!
While we are proud of our equipment and maintain the highest standards for it, some parents may be interested in purchasing equipment for their sons. If you are interested in purchasing a helmet or shoulder pads, SSPW will be taking orders for personally owned helmets from either Riddell or Schutt starting May 1. If you are interested in purchasing a helmet or shoulder pads, please contact Scott Durdle to discuss prices, styles, etc.
We still have a few of the Riddell Speed helmets from last year for sale as well. They are $150 a piece and are available now. They are all youth medium sizes.
Three months until the season starts!
Meet Bob Reed
A few of you have had the pleasure of meeting Bob Reed at some of our functions. For those of you that don't know Bob, he is a retired professional football player with experience in both the NFL and the CFL. He enjoyed a decorated career with his most recent honor being named one of the 50 greatest Minnesota Vikings.
Once retiring from football, Bob dedicated his life to helping youth sports and scholar programs. He has helped various youth sports programs in the area raise hundreds of thousands of dollars. He was also instrumental in bringing the NFL Alumni Association to the Capital District. Because he stresses academics as much as sports, Pop Warner is a perfect fit for his talents. Many of you were at the banquet were Bob gave the
key note speech. This was just the start for him taking on a more visible role with our prog ram. Already he has worked to help lobby the city and the school district to come to an agreement on the maintenance of the Rec. fields. He would also like to work closely with our board in the all important area of fund raising.
Chances are this year you will be seeing a lot of Bob around the field and I hope you join me in welcoming him to our program.
